ZIGI BEN-HAIM

1945 in Bagdad, Irak, geboren, aufgewachsen in Israel, lebt und arbeitet Zigi Ben-Haim heute in Israel und New York. Er wurde mit vielen hoch dotierten internationalen Preisen und Stipendien ausgezeichnet und nahm an zahlreichen Ausstellungen und internationale Kunstmessen in USA, Canada, Israel, Schweden, Deutschland, Frankreich, Belgien, Großbritannien, Schweiz, Spanien, Italien und Korea teil. Er ist außerdem auch in sehr vielen großen und wichtigen, privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen, wie auch zum Beispiel im Guggenheim-Museum New York, vertreten.

Zigi Ben-Haim ist ein Vollblutkünstler mit Leib und Seele. Seine bausteinartigen Werke, die vorwiegend auf handgebürsteten Aluminiumplatten entstehen, zeigen Motive, die oft auch von allgemeiner und sozialer Bedeutung sind. Private Belange, Gedanken und Teile seiner persönlichen Erfahrungen werden im Fluss der Sprachen und Bilder verschiedener Kulturen eingefangen. Der Künstler erforscht hierbei verschiedene ästhetische Möglichkeiten: Textfragmente, Bildübertragungen, abstrakte Formen und ganz konkrete Abbildungen, einige gefunden, andere erfunden. In diesem Prozess bilden sie einen fantastischen Kalender, eine fortschrittliche und manchmal sogar ekstatische Abkapselung vom Leben. Zigi Ben-Haim sagt: „Die Essenz meiner Arbeit liegt darin, die Spannung zwischen Überleben und Verschwinden auszugleichen. Meine Arbeit ist der Keim von Inspiration… fähig neues Leben zu bringen.“ Ben-Haim kombiniert in seinen Werken beides, Elemente der Malerei und der Skulptur, er produziert reiche Strukturen und faszinierende Farben. Er benutzt Material der industriellen Welt, z.B. die schon erwähnten Aluminium Platten, um biomorphische Formen zu kreieren und eines seiner Lieblingsmotiv sind Blätter, welche die Natur als verbindendes Element unter den Erdbewohnern symbolisiert, manchmal klar erkennbar und manchmal kaum sichtbar.

Wie Michael Brenson von der New York Times schrieb, vermittelt Zigi Ben-Haim Ideen der Verzauberung und Umgestaltung. Außer dem Symbol des Blattes, welches das Leben, die Fruchtbarkeit vermitteln soll, findet man in seinen Bildern – in abstrakter Form – oft auch Symbole wie etwa Ameisen, die den Fleiß, die Aktivität symbolisieren oder das Symbol des Ziegelsteins, welches uns an Aufbau, Entwicklung und Stabilität denken lässt.
